Sorry, I deleted my first draft, needed some grammar edits...
Good song, but its weird reading lyrics without the music, especially when you're not locked into the tune like I wasn't (yes, I'm musically retarded). Because you know the words were meant to be driven by the music and not meant to stand alone...
But I you-tubed it, and the song is really good, and I obviously heard it before, but wasn't sure with just the words. But I guess if the song is familiar, the music just comes as you read it...
But if you are as musically unaware as I am, I just thought it would be cool to watch this youtube clip... Then, you can really drift away (something I love doing all too often), right here.

Thanks for the link! The version I have was from a Happy Meal Kids Bop version that someone at Bill's work thought my kids would want. The words were the same, but clearly the feeling behind the words was better coming straight from the author of the song. I didn't even know who Dobie Gray was, so thanks for enlightening me. Listening to Dobie sing it (yes, we're already on a first name basis) actually brought tears to my eyes. I'm going to go listen to it again now because he said something at the end there about the "early morning hours". Something I can relate to again these days...
Yep, definitely better coming from Dobie. At the end he says, "take me away... early in the morning... take me away... let me fly..." I've always loved the way President Hinckley's wife said that he "let me fly." A talent Bill has for sure, so now the song means even more to me. Thanks again for the link, I'm going to go put it on my original post so I can get to it quicker.

Before Bill calls me out on it in public, I should clarify that Dobie Gray did not write the song. He sings the most popular version probably because he brings the most to it. Anyway, Wiki says someone else wrote it. My bad.
Tasha had me play it over and over yesterday as she was building a box airplane. She now adlibs some "drift away"'s to jazz it up. It's quite cute.
Ahhhh Helena, I have been so out of the loop with life I have not looked at anyones blogs for awhile. So I'm at work and just want to "Drift Away!" LOL and I just decided to read some blogs. Yours first, and I'm reading it and I just love that song!!! Its a 70's music. BUT what I found out was the words to the choris was NOT what I thought it was. LOL ah good laugh at work for me. I thought it said give me the people to free my soul, well almost close. I have been singing that verse soo wrong. Now I stand corrected. Thanks for your blog today. Good one!!
